Sage HMS Announces RadWise Enhancement: New Toolkit Improves Integration with
Electronic Health Records and Computerized Provider Order Entry Systems
Minneapolis, MN - December 3, 2008 - Sage Health Management Solutions, Inc. (Sage HMS) today announced
the availability of a software developers tool kit (SDK) for RadWise®, its web-based radiology decision
support system. With the SDK developers of Electronic Health Record (EHR) and Computerized Provider
Order Entry (CPOE) systems can now embed radiology decision support directly into their own products.
RadWise uses an evidence-based "best practice" approach that helps determine the appropriateness
of radiology imaging procedures. The new SDK functionality provides enhancements for three best case
applications:
- Diagnostic Imaging Exchange Networks for large communities to incorporate RadWise into
their database directly for improved utilization management and data sharing, and to minimize duplicative scans and
track patient radiation exposure. Accessing via the Internet and a single Application Service Provider
(ASP) provides access across multiple hospitals, ambulatory and imaging center systems.
- Free-standing EHR and CPOE systems for an interface methodology via approved interoperability
HL7 and or XML strategies to update patient records with the appropriate
order and supporting documentation of presenting signs and symptoms for Radiology departments review.
- EHR and CPOE software companies to design and develop systems and strategies for radiology
decision support directly embedded into their applications, reducing or eliminating the reliance on
prior-authorization. Most health care professionals agree this provides the clinician the least distracting
process during their ordering and documentation process.
The new SDK enancements allow software developers the ability to directly offer the RadWise service or co-brand its clinical content with their own prodcucts. RadWise provides clinicial users with evidence-based ordering
recommendations based on the patient's diagnosis and symptoms and the procedure requested. By ensuring
that the appropriate procedures are ordered, RadWise can improve quality and outcomes as well as reduce
the estimated 30-40% of healthcare costs that are attributed to inappropriate orders.
RadWise is a secure, encrypted Internet based tool that can be implemented inside or
outside of an institution's firewall and can be integrated with existing practice management or
radiology information systems.
